Dean Gladstone – Resilience And Evolution As A Human Being

By Sonia Goss | Blog, Podcast, Real Talk With Outperformers, dean gladstone | 13 Mar 2023 |

Brad chats with Deano about his nonlinear journey of being a lifeguard, reality TV star and his mission to empower people through workshops involving breath work and ice baths. Here are some of the podcast highlights;

Lifeguard first, Reality TV second

When talking about his career as a Bondi lifeguard, Deano says that he was a lifeguard long before Reality TV was even a ‘thing’. The aim of the hit TV show was to educate people about beach safety and what is involved in being a lifeguard. He also talks about how he still can’t get his head around people stopping him on the streets to say hello when they recognise him from his time on the popular reality TV show.

Round 1

In 2005, Gladstone suffered serious head and back injuries, even losing 4 teeth, after being king hit at a football game. Unfortunately,  this incident also pushed Deano into depression as well as triggered anxiety, allergies and reactions to certain food leading him to become obsessed with his own health and fitness. It is from this time, Dean says he learnt so much to help him rebuild to a “bigger, stronger, better, smarter me” he says.

Understanding stress

Deano is a certified Whim Hoff Instructor (Wim Hof developed the Wim Hof Method after documenting his findings while undertaking an impressive list of physical achievements in nature, from swimming underneath the ice to running a half-marathon above the Arctic Circle) and believes that it is through breathing techniques and ice baths, people can learn more about and understand stress.

Tapping into stress as an empowering opportunity

When asked by Brad, “ How do you tap into stress as a positive or an empowering opportunity?”, Deano says that stress isn’t a bad thing, it’s what we grow and evolve from. He compares it to an ice bath where the body is under stress for the first two minutes but then begins to react positively. “When we break down the muscles, more grow back and we become stronger” Deano says, is the theory behind cold/ice baths.

The benefits of breath work

Hyperventilation is a fast breathing technique which reduces the carbon dioxide and blood oxygen and when practiced in a safe controlled space, the person feels lightheaded as the blood flow to the brain changes. Deano says “people have these mind altering experiences” and it “empowers people to maybe to take some sort of health journey”.

Round 2

When living in Bali after the Bondi Rescue season was filmed there, Deano had an scooter accident which caused serious damage to his foot including potential loss of his toes. He explains his ability to deal with the accident as it occured and the healing process was enabled by his learnings through breathing techniques and ice baths.

Be your best for others

Deano acknowledges that as a lifeguard, being as fit and healthy as possible, is potentially the difference between saving someone’s life and them drowning. His advice is to “be the best for others… We all have someone we want to be better for, find that person, find that passion”.
