On this week’s episode of Real Talk With Outperformers, Brad welcomes Ian Schubach, CEO at Red Leaf & Co-Founder at Tracking Success. Ian has built a successful business around educating through virtual challenges, inspired by the four habits and behaviours of iconic African animals – the lion, elephant, leopard, and giraffe. Ian shares his unique approach of taking people on these virtual adventures to challenge and unite teams while helping push them towards success!

Here are some highlights of his conversation with host, Brad Eisenhuth:

Ian’s Journey to Entrepreneurship

Ian shares his journey of uncertainty in his early 20s, failing at university, and feeling unsure about his future. When his parents suggested he “spread his wings”, he came across a newspaper ad for game rangers. Despite not knowing much about the job, Ian decided to give it a try. He went through a two-week long job interview and found himself captivated by the practical aspects of the role, such as driving land rovers through the bush, experiencing amazing wildlife, and exploring the African Bush – he was instantly hooked to nature and wildlife, forever.

When asked what inspired him to turn to business, Ian recalls a moment on safari where a person from Wall Street admired a pride of lions' teamwork while hunting and had commented that he “wished his team behaved the same way”. This encounter and the conversation that followed changed Ian's perspective on team dynamics and helped to inspire his work of connecting nature and business.

Nature and Business

Nature serves as a powerful metaphor for various aspects of life, including business. Ian shares how his experiences in the African bush shaped his understanding of teamwork, leadership, and high-performance culture. By observing the behaviours of animals in their natural habitat, he draws parallels to the dynamics of a business environment. For example, how a pride of lions hunting a wildebeest can be an example a team working together towards a common goal. Everyone in the “hunting unit” knows their role and contributes to the collective effort. This parallels the concept of a successful team in a business setting, where individuals each understand their unique responsibilities and work together towards a shared objective.

Ian also emphasizes the importance of finding one's “niche” in the ecosystem. He describes how different species in the African bush have evolved to occupy specific niches, allowing them to thrive and survive. This concept can also be applied to the business world, where organizations and individuals must identify their unique strengths and areas of expertise in order to succeed. Just as animals have adapted to their environments over thousands of years, businesses must adapt to the ever-changing market landscape and find their own niche to stand out and thrive.

Virtual experiences in nature – how do they work?

Ian and Brad discuss how his virtual experiences in nature offer individuals the opportunity to connect with and explore the natural world in a unique and immersive way. Ian explains how the power of these experiences can evoke strong emotional responses, deepen understanding, and foster a sense of connection with the natural world.

Ian shared some examples of his workshops that were focused on teamwork building. These workshops use real-life scenarios, specifically focusing on observing and learning from experts in various fields such as surfing, cave diving, and mountain climbing. The goal of the workshop is to create a team-based decision-making experience for participants, where they are presented with challenges similar to those faced by the experts and are encouraged to make choices and learn from the consequences.

These workshops take a unique approach by filming the experts in action and then creating scenarios based on their experiences. This allows participants to imagine themselves in the field and make decisions as if they were facing the same conditions. By doing so, they can learn from the experts' processes and gain insights into effective leadership and teamwork. These experiences offer a very unique and experiential approach to learning and development!

Culture in Business

Ian and Brad discuss how integrating culture into business is crucial for the success and growth of any organization – especially when it comes to building a positive team environment and creating a thriving business.

Ian also explores how by embracing fun and incorporating entertainment into culture-building activities, organizations can create a positive and engaging work environment. This is also a large part of Ian’s own work in virtual experiences. By creating memorable experiences like these, organizations can foster high levels of engagement, create memorable experiences and result in a positive work culture.

Ian also compares a successful business culture to a shark thriving in its sea environment, where it understands its prey, the currents, and the rock shelves. Similarly, a business culture should support and empower its employees, providing them with the necessary tools and environment to succeed. By aligning the right people with the right culture, organizations can create a harmonious and productive work environment.
