On this week’s episode of Real Talk With Outperformers, Brad welcomes Tristan Sternson, an Australian tech industry pioneer, and the global co-lead of Singtel’s global digital, data, and cloud services consultancy NCS NEXT. He is also CEO of ARQ, one of Australia’s leading providers of digital and tech services, with a client base spanning Government and enterprise organizations, including more than half of Australia’s top 20 ASX-listed companies!

Tristan's journey is a testament to the power of resilience, learning, and entrepreneurial spirit. In this episode, he shares with us his experiences from being a competitive triathlete to leading a major business with over 12,000 consultants across Southeast Asia. Tristan’s story is not just about success but also about the lessons learned from failures and the importance of continuously challenging oneself.

Here are some highlights of his conversation with host, Brad Eisenhuth:

Traumatic experience to future determination

Tristan opens up about a traumatic event that happened to him which heavily shaped his mindset and future. The event occurred during the 1997 Maccabiah Games. As the speaker and other athletes were marching into the stadium, a bridge collapsed, resulting in the death of four Australians and several injuries. Being only 17 years old at the time, Tristan was deeply affected by the chaos and tragedy of the situation. This event alone could have discouraged him from continuing with the race, but instead, it fueled his determination to compete and win.

Tristan believed he a chance to win and decided to proceed with the competition. However, the race presented its own challenges. The Mediterranean Sea, with its high salt content, made swimming difficult, especially in scorching temperatures of 42 degrees Celsius. Tristan suffered from dehydration, hallucinations, and even received a medical penalty during the bike ride. Despite these obstacles, Tristan pushed himself to the edge to finish the race and ultimately came in third in his division. Tristan shared that this traumatic experience during the triathlon race had a profound impact on his future endeavors as a business person. It instilled in him a mindset of resilience, perseverance, and a willingness to push boundaries.

Flash forward to the present, Tristan is now a serial entrepreneur and growth expert. Over the past decade alone, Tristan has built and sold three technology businesses in Australia for close to $400m. Additionally, in 2022, Tristan was named as a runner up in The CEO Magazine’s 2022 Executive of the Year Awards in the ‘CEO of the Year $100m+ turnover’ category and received the Swinburne University of Technology Alumni Technology Innovation and Impact Award.

Analytical thinking drives entrepreneurial success.

Tristan identifies as an analytical person, and he reflects on the factors that have shaped his entrepreneurial journey. He also discusses how being left-handed, creative, and a technologist has influenced his mindset and approach to business.

But Tristan shares he wasn’t always so analytical. He opens up about one of his first business experiences - a venture into selling AFL-colored blankets. After being inspired by comfortable blankets they found in India, Tristan and his friend decided to import them into Australia. However, they failed to research whether they needed a license to sell AFL-branded products. This oversight led to the inability to sell the blankets and financial loss. This moment taught Tristan the importance of thinking analytically and conducting thorough research before acting.

Brad and Tristan discuss how technologists, by nature, are inquisitive and scientific. They have a thirst for knowledge and an innate desire to understand how things work. This analytical mindset drives them to delve deep into every aspect of their endeavors, leaving no stone unturned.

This analytical approach can sometimes annoy certain people, but for Tristan, it is an essential part of who he is. He has a passion for understanding the inner workings of things, particularly when it comes to building mobile apps. And his love for development and construction stems from being able to see the raw materials and carefully selecting the right components to create something functional and successful.

Challenging the mind for longevity

Tristan expresses his enjoyment in work and the belief that if he stops doing things that challenge his cognition, his mental abilities will start to slow down. He emphasizes the importance of using one's mind to stay active, healthy, fit, and alert, as well as to prevent conditions like Alzheimer's and dementia.

To illustrate this point, Tristan shares his personal experience of carrying two computers, an Apple and a Windows PC, and switching between them every half day. He acknowledges that this practice can be frustrating and challenging, but believes that it keeps his mind working hard. Tristan suggests that even small tasks that challenge one to think differently can have a positive impact on cognitive longevity.

Biohacking Adventures

Tristan is a big fan of biohacking and improving one’s self and longevity. He mentions that he personally uses ice baths and stem cells for healing purposes and longevity.

In addition to stem cells, Tristan also mentions NAD, a substance that aids in cell generation and provides nourishment and oxygenation. He also mentions the use of exosomes, which activate various processes in the body. He describes the stem cell treatment as a two-hour procedure administered intravenously by a doctor.

After the stem cell treatment, Tristan engages in oxygen therapy and red light therapy. Oxygen therapy is believed to aid in the absorption of stem cells, while red light therapy is described as a 30-minute session lying on a bed that targets every cell in the body.

Brad and Tristan continue the discussion by emphasizing the importance of feeling one's best and functioning well. Tristan mentions tracking his bloods regularly and undergoing various tests to assess his physical performance. However, he also acknowledges the limitations of scientific measurements and emphasize the importance of subjective feelings and overall well-being.
