By Sonia Goss | Blog, Podcast, Real Talk With Outperformers, Brad Smith | 20 Feb 2023 |

Brad Smith is a 2x Australian Young Entrepreneur of the year recipient and founder of the only Australian Motorcycle company, braaap. Brad and Brad unpack Smith’s professional journey in our latest podcast, from the time Smith imported 10 motorcycles at the age of 17 to now owning one of the country’s most exciting emerging brands and winner of "National Retailer of the year" for four years. Here are some of the highlights from the podcast

Passion for Motorcycling

Brad begins the podcast talking about his passion for motorcycles and how growing up, everything was done through his desire to get better, faster and win. The support of his parents who were by no means rich financially, attributed to a lot of Smith’s success in the sport and industry of motorcycling.

Starting at a young age

At the young age of 12, Brad realised the financial impacts of his participation in the motorcycling sport was having on his parents and made the decision to make it his ‘pathway so that others with the same passion could pursue their dreams too.

Naïve Ambition

Growing up with parents that empowered their children with education, self-help and business tools and asking all the right questions of business people ‘in the know’ as well as saving his own money between the ages of 13 and 16, Brad had the foundation to start his business journey at the age of 17.

Being in Start Up Mode for 17 years

One of the first risks Brad ever took was spending all the money he saved on a custom bike when he was just 17. Unfortunately, he was ‘ripped off’ and the bike was not what he thought it would. In his own words, Brad explains that this incident “sparked a hunger in me to go and make it happen”.

Adding value to the customer

In this segment, Brad talks about how losing a sale to a ‘silent’ competitor shifted his business’ focus from an on-site retailer to one of Australia’s most exciting online motorcycle stores. This allowed the savings to be passed on to the customer, giving them ‘bang for their buck”

Discipline Vs Agility

When asked where he’s at in terms of maturity and discipline versus agility, Smith reflects that often “the pendulum is swinging too far” and it’s a fine line between systemising and implementing discipline in his business and consistently innovating and moving. He tries to find balance each day by prioritising the needs of business.

Vision overcomes challenge

Brad Smith says that the mantra he lives by which his parents (in his own words) “drummed” into him is “Vision overcomes challenge”. He explains that this mantra has not always worked but when it has, it’s counted. Case in point, moving from an on-site motorcycle store to online platform which added value to customers.

“𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪’𝙫𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚, 𝙜𝙤 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙖 𝙗𝙞𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙧 𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣”
